NSPN’s Diplomatic Skills for Scientists Training Course with Meridian Center for Diplomatic Engagement is an immersive six-week online program designed for early-career scientists seeking to enhance their soft skills for a successful transition into diplomacy. The course focuses on critical competencies, including effective communication, negotiation skills, and cross-cultural navigation. The program culminates in an in-person training and networking event in Washington, D.C., providing participants with hands-on experience and valuable connections in the field.

This program is perfect for STEM students and professionals eager to explore science diplomacy and develop the foundational skills needed to advance their careers. Graduates of our courses have successfully transitioned into roles within the field by leveraging the knowledge and expertise they’ve gained. The course welcomes all science and technology policy enthusiasts interested in expanding their understanding and pursuing new opportunities.

PROGRAM FEE: $750 per participant
(option to apply for financial assistance is available).

The program fee includes six engaging virtual sessions led by an instructor from the U.S Foreign Service Institute, as well as travel expenses to Washington, D.C., including flights and lodging accommodations for the in-person training and networking event.

To support accessibility, we may offer financial assistance to participants who meet our selection criteria and complete the financial assistance application. Additionally, we strongly encourage applicants to seek professional development funding from their employer or university. If a letter of support is needed to secure these funds, we are happy to provide one.

Program Structure

The NSPN x Meridian Diplomatic Skills for Scientists program consists of six required virtual classes (each lasting 2 hours) and culminates in an in-person networking event in Washington, D.C. Throughout the program, participants will develop essential skills, including effective communication, negotiating skills, and cross-cultural competencies.

  • Six (2-hour) sessions from July to August, 2025, featuring guest speakers, peer discussions, and hands-on exercises. Attendance at all sessions is required to earn a certificate.

  • In-person networking & training in Washington, D.C. connects participants and builds their network with US and foreign diplomats and other science diplomacy professionals in Washington, D.C.

  • Applications from U.S. citizens or green card holders will be reviewed on a case by case basis. If you have questions, please contact us at info@scipolnetwork.org.

  • Courses will take place over two hours in the evenings (ET) on Mondays throughout July and August 2025. Participants will be expected to complete reading between classes. In-person participation for the final course trainings in Washington, D.C. is also required.
